(October 2009) - Ables, who grew up in Brady, owns and runs Ables Top Hat Chimney Sweeps. He has been sweeping chimneys in Central Texas for almost thirty years.

When I was 28, my wife and I moved into a house in Brady, and I started looking for someone who could sweep our chimney. We had just moved from Kerrville, where I’d been working at a radio station, so that I could work with my dad as a housepainter. I’d had some health problems, so I’d decided to get out of radio and live near family. As I asked around about chimney cleaning, no one had any idea. But everyone I talked to said, “If you find a chimney sweep, let me know.” Suddenly I said, “Wait a minute. Is this my next career?”

(from Coppers Cove Leader Press • by Geoffrey Hill Friday • September 28, 2007)

October is fire prevention month and a good time to consider your fireplace or wood stove's safety to make sure it is ready for the coming winter.

Doug Ables, owner of Ables Top Hat Chimney Sweeps, gives several tips on how to heat your home safely with wood. A chimney sweep for 27 years in Central Texas, Ables says the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends chimneys be checked annually and cleaned if necessary. However, he says it all depends on usage as to how often the chimney needs attention.

NEWS has meant a lot to my life...I spent many years in radio news in cities such as Brady, Big Spring, Kerrville, Childress, Giddings, Breckenridge, Houston and Nashville, Tn. during which time I interviewed 5 Texas governors, a President and Vice-President, many Senators and Representatives as well as international and national notables. I have been heard on the Texas State Network, AP, NBC, ABC and CBS radio as well as almost having a feature on Walter Cronkite's CBS news but President Nixon's resignation pre-empted me and I only appeared in Atlanta. My last venture in radio was in Tennessee as a Christian missionary production director for a religious broadcasting network. Most of our broadcasting was in Africa and the Philippines.
